Dabu printing involves a meticulous process, starting with washing the base fabric to remove impurities. Wooden blocks are then dipped in natural dyes and hand-printed onto the fabric. Next, a mud resist mixture, comprising gum, lime, and white chaff, is applied and left to dry. Afterward, the fabric undergoes dyeing, followed by washing to remove excess dye and paste.
The rich indigo hue is sourced from the leaves of the Indigofera plant. Extracted and processed into a soluble form through a reduction process involving aeration, the dye is then applied to the fabric. Multiple dips into the indigo vat, with intervals of oxidation, achieve the desired depth of colour.
